Ik hoop dat het niet erg is als ik vaak in het engels mijn reviewtje post (omdat ik het op lboxd plaats).
Bronson (2008): 6/10
Unfortunately, another disappointing feature from Nicolas Winding Refn. He was one of the directors I used to follow, but aside of his miniseries hasn't done much in recent years. I thought Drive was (slightly) overrated, but still a good movie, while Only God Forgives had an amazing style but the plot was a bit lacking or confusing. It's just the cinematic experience of The Neon Demon is one that blew me away, and one that is still among my favourite movies. Before Drive, NWR wasn't known for the style he would later use. Although Bronson has the good use of music in common with Drive.
While watching it, i had sometimes the feeling I was watching a Von Trier movie instead of a Refn movie. I'm not sure if that's justified. It felt a bit more like it was a dogme 95 style movie, quite minimalist as well, but with some occassional 80's synths tracks mixed with the use of classical music, like for example in Antichrist from Von Trier.
Recently, i've had a hard time identifying with criminals or unlikeable characters in movies. I think here it is done quite intentionally. It's about as much as a based on a true story like Apocalypto is, which is nothing bad, just feel like the references to the story the movie is based on should be removed.
There are some things that are done well, like the music or the "slowish movement/pacing", but I feel other aspects are a bit lacking or not executed well enough, so overall personally i thought this was a mediocre effort.
