Psychedelic journeys: the first trip

Lekker klinkende Ierse psychedelische band. Mij waren ze volledig onbekend tot ik hun naam zag op de affiche voor Desertfest Gent. Ik zal zeker aanwezig zijn.

Well that wait is finally over! The band have just announced a brand new 10 track album called 'Oh Death' which is being released on 21 October.

Alles is de moeite hoor. Maar sowieso beginnen met hun eerste plaat: World Music. Boordevol goede muziek, met invloeden van etnische muziek van over heel de wereld.
Als dat je ligt, kan je gerust aan de andere albums beginnen. Commune is more of the same en ook erg goed. Requiem is wat langer en heeft een paar momenten waar de flow even kwijt is imo, maar ik vind het wel echt een sterk album en leg die tegenwoordig vaker op dan de anderen. Misschien omdat ik die destijds onterecht links heb laten liggen.

En als je meer wil weten over de genres en stijlen die hen beïnvloed hebben, op hun Spotify bandpagina staan enkele playlists die zij zelf(?) hebben samengesteld. Heel interessant.
 
Eentje die hier (denk ik) nog niet is gepasseerd is de Brown Acid compilatiereeks. Voor zij die het niet kennen, de compilaties worden uitgebracht door Riding Easy records, totale badasses met een liefde voor alles dat vuil is en fuzz gitaren heeft.

For those that don’t know, Brown Acid is a series of compilation albums featuring a collection of underground hard rock, stoner rock, crazed psychedelic rock, frenzied proto-punk, and proto-metal ranging primarily from the late 60’s into the mid 1970’s from nearly 100 different bands in total.

Er zullen hier een paar users zijn die dit zullen smaken. Persoonlijke favorieten zijn 1, 7 en 9. Maar ik zou ze er allemaal doorjagen, elke comp heeft minstens een paar killerschijven staan.

Denk dat deze misschien hier past, twijfelde tussen dit topic en dat met experimental rock:

Voor het eerst is de muziek van Les Rallizes Dénudés op de streamingkanalen verschenen. Een legendarische Japanse underground psych/noise groep, vooral ’77 Live is een fantastisch album ondanks de niet zo geweldige opnamekwaliteit.

 

Stoner incantations and psychedelic rage filtered through a prism of not leaving your hometown much at all - RIP 2017

The Non Travellin' Band were a psychedelic band from Madison, WI active from 2012 - 2017. Held together by the minds of Lue Lueck, Brother Joseph Tucci, Dead Luke and a rotating cast of others, the band ultimately lived up to their name by never playing a single note outside the city limits. In any given month, you could catch them a couple times at Mickey’s Tavern, their unofficial home base, where they were working out their material in a live setting. “Rest in Peace, Hippie” was recorded as a coda to their creative run as a band in the winter of 2017, all tracks were laid down in a fever dream over 4 days in a local living room and a basement. The only documentation that now remains of the Non Travellin’ Band are a spattering of demos on a Soundcloud account with long forgotten login credentials, an out of print live cassette on Moon Glyph Records, and the posthumous “Rest in Peace, Hippie.”

Aanrader voor fans van Ty, Allah-Las en Brian Jonestown Massacre. Heerlijk album.
 

Japanse band op Guru Guru Brain, het label van Kikagaku Moyo en Minami Deutsch (die laatste spelen een optreden tijdens de Gentse Feesten in een kelder, allen daarheen).

Approach to Anima, the group’s debut album released on Guruguru Brain, finds maya ongaku building a foundational groove while tapping into their innermost psyche. Sonoda’s malleable guitar and vocals, Takano’s sinuous bass lines, Ikeda’s floating woodwinds, and a sprinkling of delicate percussion—all coalesce into an aural experience that’s assertive yet abstract, calm but unsettling. The slow building, sax-laden “Approach” serves as an introduction to maya ongaku’s world, while the appropriately-named “Water Dream” floats its way toward the gentle finale of “Pillow Song.” It’s a concise distillation of their many interests and influences, from Neo-Dada and Fluxus, to where contemporary art intersects with the development of modern recording technology in the ‘60s and ‘70s.


As the title suggests, Approach to Anima is not intended to be a terminus; it’s merely the beginning of an exploration. The three childhood friends that comprise maya ongaku are always looking beyond the confines of the idyllic but rapidly gentrifying enclave of their beloved Enoshima. Feeding off of the energy that still radiates from the triumphant, decade-long journey of their label bosses’ band Kikagaku Moyo, who rose to global prominence from scrappy beginnings busking on the streets of Takadanobaba, they hope to go wherever inspiration takes them, to anywhere around the globe where their music can find a home.
