what happened is that
1. working class females preferred trump over clinton with a clear margin
2. educated people voted more democratic than four years ago, but not that much as predicted (and they were part of the trump coallition in michigan)
3. afro-american turnout was disappointing and their support was less overwhelming than four years ago when barack obama was on the ballot
4. hispanics surprisingly supported trump more than romney in proportional share despite record turnout surge, especially in florida the difference was enormous (otherwise clinton would have won florida).
5. a lot of obama voters decided to vote for donald trump (reagan democrats, now called trump democrats). Clinton did not enough to attrack this kind of working-class people (that actually supported bernie sanders).
6. red counties became dark red.
7. hillary clinton overestimated her vote share in the rust belt, partly because the polls were consistently wrong. Clinton never visited Wisconsin or invested in the state, because she didn't even thought the state was in play (the polls were completely wrong about this state). The state didn't vote for a republican president since 1984 when it elected ronald reagan.
8. donald trump top issues where he won voters were terrorism, immigration and surprisingly trade (what was an important issue in the rust belt states). Bernie Sanders also ran a anti-trade and anti-establishment campaign but lost from hillary clinton.
trump helped the republican senators a lot, and the democrats only gained one seat what is a huge disappointment. it's the first time since 1928 that republicans rule presidency, the senate & the house.
