Lords of Shadow is not a game you're going to plow through in a single sitting. On the map screen there are 12 chapters, each with multiple stages and some seriously long boss battles. After playing for nearly eight hours, I was slashing my way through Chapter 3. The story, as told through detailed in-game cutscenes, seemed to be just getting started.
There are heaps of collectibles, upgradeable combat techniques, and everything is tracked by a percentage rating for each stage in a chapter. I hadn't completed more than 50 percent for any of them, but I did unlock individual challenges that entice players to go back and retry stages while meeting specific goals. By the end of the day, I was overwhelmed by the scope of the game and still felt as though I'd barely scratched the surface.
Long-time fans of the Castlevania series may want to drop any preconceptions they have about this latest adventure. While there are certainly all manner of monsters and terrifying villains in Lords of Shadow, the environments in the first three chapters more resemble something from a high fantasy adventure than a claustrophobic castle.
The environments I played were lush, detailed, and mostly outdoors. They were detailed down to wildlife like birds and frogs that scatter in Gabriel's path. In the first three chapters players travel through swamps, jungles, ancient ruins, and snow fields. There were scenes of raking sunlight and classic ruins; beautiful scenery for brutal combat. Considering just how large the game is, it seems as though the more recognizable villains don't appear until further on in the adventure, so I may have encountered a chupacabra before I saw any vampires, but that doesn't mean the fangs won't come out before the tale ends.
