It launches this September with PlayStation 3 exclusive Resistance 3.

In a statement issued to Eurogamer this evening, Sony said PSN Pass will grant "full online access" to participating games.

"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities," Sony said.

"This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

"This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

The implication is that second-hand copies of Resistance 3 will not include PSN Pass, forcing pre-owned buyers to pay for full online access.

With PSN Pass Sony is following the lead of EA, THQ, Codemasters and Warner, all of which have implemented an Online Pass scheme.

If you aren’t among the first recruits given access to the Beta - don’t fret. We will be randomly distributing codes to a select few throughout the duration of the Public Beta. All are welcome to apply, but only some will be chosen for the opportunity to truly resist. Are you one of them?

Wanted to give you a head’s up about the Resistance 3 beta, when it’s launching and how you can get access. Starting next week, you may begin to see some of your favorite Insomniacs and others on PSN playing the Resistance 3 Beta. We are launching our Friends and Family beta next week in order to test our servers out before the mad rush of public beta users from SOCOM 4 and EU PlayStation Plus. We will be updating our servers, configs and patching the beta during the course of it to be sure we’re ready for the public beta in August, as well as the release of Resistance 3 on September 6th. We expect to run this Friends and Family beta over the next few weeks.

This is important, as many of you are holding early access vouchers to the public beta from SOCOM 4. The public beta is tentatively scheduled to begin in early August for those who got Early Access vouchers from specially-marked copies of SOCOM 4 in North America and for PlayStation Plus subscribers in SCEE territories.
