FreakyJP zei:Voor al die 'moar recoil' whiners:
Recoil seems to be the hot buzz word recently around shooters and there are a lot of topics lately where it appears that individuals feel that more recoil will make weapons feel or accuracy or performance better but does it?
Recoil, or ‘kickback’ is the travel of a weapon system to the rear as explosive gasses from the round being expended from the weapon. With a closed bolt and a tube (your barrel) most of the energy is used to push the round out of the weapon. Due to Newton’s law of ‘every action has a direct and opposing reaction’ some of the energy is translated in pushing the weapon opposite of the bullets travel.
Recoil is not a point of consideration when aiming and the only reason you would consider recoil is if you’re compensating (wrongly) for your own shortfalls as a shooter. Anticipating a big kick you might jerk the trigger versus squeezing the trigger which results in barrel movement before the shot and results in off target or full miss results.
In games, there is no trigger pressure so any real life bad habit shouldn’t be present. You also do not feel the impact of the weapon in your shoulder pocket which means you shouldn’t be ‘flinching’. Based on this everyone should be a damn accurate shooter in these games. Because of this, developers put a certain amount of spread on semi and full automatic weapons to introduce a certain amount of inaccuracy that would result from unsupported or weak firing stances but keep in mind that most of the time you’re supposed to be playing as highly qualified troops. If anything, in games like MOH when playing lesser trained insurgents we should see more spread and misses but because of balancing, in these games they have to find a happy medium between both sides that all levels of shooters.
Everyone knows what happens on the business end of a weapon, the round is fired and the bullet travels to the target (we hope) but the part that people sometimes get fuzzy on is what happens right at the point the round leaves the barrel’s muzzle. Gasses escaping from behind the round as the bullet leaves the barrel can expel in an uneven manner and cause the bullet to move and even tumble. These gasses direction also cause Newton’s law to push the barrel in any number of directions (usually you feel it as an up or down barrel travel) in a concept largely confused for ‘Recoil’ which is called ‘muzzle climb’. Uncompensated or uneven compensation for expelled gas at the muzzle (end of the barrel) typically pushes the barrel up and you see the telltale signs as rounds walk UP a target. To compensate for these effects a muzzle break directs gasses out in specific directions and in such a pattern as to cancel the force out and keep the barrel centered. You normally will see a star pattern when firing as gasses come out certain areas of the muzzle break at the same time or out both sides evenly. This is based on the weapon and round characteristics to manage the weapon’s personality (how it’s built and how it acts when fired).
Developers in games can’t make you feel the impact (not yet) but they do try to simulate the effect by giving the weapon some movement and by increasing the spread of automatic fire as the rate of fire increases. In addition, developers will increase that spread yet again when the firing is being done from less supported firing position (pocket of shoulder vs. hip firing or prone). There is no way to avoid the physics on this planet so a combination of weapon technology and shooter knowledge, training and experience are the way to deal with its challenges. To be honest, there should be a lot more impact on weapon accuracy placed on in game shooters based on the position (standing, kneeling or prone) as well as the players movement (running and shooting equals a generally inaccurate fire).
So, to all those ‘more recoil’ people, maybe you should be asking for more barrel movement and round spread. Maybe one day we’ll see a developer who will increase the accuracy based on the shooters level in the game to simulate less experienced and/or disciplined shooters. In any event, if you want to minimize your recoil/muzzle effects on your shooting then the key is what they call ‘controlled bursts’ where 1 to 3 rounds fired with time in between to settle the weapon on the target afford a much greater control and hit rates vs. your trigger jerking or holding ‘spray and pray’ shooters.
