Bron: Neo Empire!Introduction:
So, yesterday I decided to take a trip to Zen-United headquarters in Bristol to meet Marketing Manager Geraint Evans and the Zen crew. Neo Empire staff member Izanami and SVB 2009 BlazBlue 3rd place Runner up and Gamerbase BlazBlue Rebellion Champion Tim119 also came along for the ride. We got a chance to check out BlazBlue: Continuum Shift in action and I managed to get an interview with Geraint about the BlazBlue: Continuum Shift console release this Year.
———————————————–
Bullet Proof: Blazblue Continuum shift is the first in the series to have download-able characters, can you tell the people reading this article what to expect?
Geraint: Well, I can’t go much further than what has already been announced – but I’ll let you draw you own conclusions from recent comments from Toshimichi Mori and that silhouette from Famitsu! Expect some really nice surprises and some news that fans will be really pleased about! BlazBlue is famous for having such a varied character roster. All of the characters are so different. Continuum shift will carry on this tradition.
Bullet Proof: Can you tell us more about the Modes within the game? A lot of people are anticipating the single player elements.
Geraint: There’s a new story mode which is a direct sequel, so you can expect twice as much in the way of Anime cut-scenes and story to explore. A lot more of the characters side stories have also been explored, and I believe fans will enjoy this. For me personally, the biggest additions would have to be the Tutorials and the Challenge mode. Some might think this is a sort of ‘dry’ addition, but once you get stuck into it, you really appreciate what it does for your experience.
One of the main criticisms towards Calamity Trigger was that it was intimidating to some people if you didn’t know the systems.
The tutorial will take you through that, as Ragna playing against Bang. It will take you through all of the core tactics you’ll need to play the game. Then it’ll introduce you to the BlazBlue Continuum Shift roster, showing you various tactics to get you started with each character. After that, the challenge mode goes really deep into each characters combos and the good thing about that is that it helps you get to grips with each characters combos, and understand how they work, how to start dealing real damage. Best of all it allows you to take elements of the combos you like, use them and change them up a bit to suit your playing style. It’s a really thorough system.
Bullet Proof: It looks very thorough indeed, and I think a lot of people are really looking forward to it.
Geraint: It’s very good for veteran players, and will have something in there for casual players too, that are just picking the game up. Anyone who invests time in these modes will see their game really improve.
Bullet Proof: There’s a little bit of a delay between the release date of the Japanese, USA and European versions. The European version is scheduled for release in October. Is there any particular reason for this?
Geraint: We released Calamity Trigger back in April, so releasing another game so quickly is quite unusual. That said, we felt and understood the frustration from the community the first time round, so we’re trying to bring the EU release of Continuum Shift as close as possible to the Japanese and USA versions.
As always we’re going through the necessary stages like translations and packaging – all the boring behind the scenes stuff! – but the truth is, these things take quite a lot of time to do. We recently announced the release date as October and everyone at Zen is totally dedicated to making this happen.
Bullet Proof: Cheeky question time…… Will there be any extra content for the European version?
Geraint: I can’t really say at this moment in time. As it stands, the game will be the same as it is in Japan and the USA.
Bullet Proof: As you should be aware, the online community for BlazBlue is quite large. Have you made any changes to the online features in response to the growing online fan-base?
Geraint: Yeah, there are a couple of big changes actually – particularly for player’s ranking system. Calamity Trigger’s player ranking had a simple win/loss ratio system. So, let’s say you played really well in the first week of release and got to number one – even if you never played online again, your rank would still be high. This obviously isn’t fair, so it’s been adjusted to work better for more regular players.
Continuum Shift also introduces some changes to the matchmaking system. Let’s say you’re awesome with your Main, Taokaka but have started messing about with Bang, but kinda suck with him, in Calamity Trigger the game would have matched you based on your skill with your Main. In Continuum Shift matchmaking is done based on your skill on a character by character basis.
Bullet Proof: BlazBlue Continuum Shift also features new immediately playable characters in Tsubaki Yayoi and Hazama. Can you tell us more about them and their play styles.
Geraint: Tsubaki is a kind of rush down character. Very flamboyant and my personal favourite out of the new characters. She’s quite weak in places, so you really have to work hard to cram your attacks in as quickly as possibly.
Hazama is the bad guy, and is quite complicated to use in comparison to Tsubaki. He has this cool chain that he uses to get very mobile around the screen and is quite useful since he doesn’t have a proper dash as such. He’s really stylish to watch and very airbourne. I actually find him tricky to use – but I’ve got no doubt he’ll quickly become a firm favourite with fans.
Bullet Proof: Why did Arc decide to go down the road of download-able characters? What are the reasons behind it? rumours on the internet have been hinting at quite a few.
Geraint: Only one has been confirmed at the moment. As far as I’m aware personally, I’m not sure how many more will be coming out. There have been hints that Makoto wouldn’t be the only one, but exactly what the numbers will be I honestly couldn’t say.
As for the reasons behind it? It’s just a case of expanding on Continuum Shift. It certainly shows Arc’s commitment to the series – and surely that can only be a good thing for everyone. People have been complaining that the DLC data is already on the disk – this isn’t the case. The fact is, making 2D characters is a hugely complicated and time consuming undertaking, much more labour intensive than a 3D character model. Each character takes about 4 months to make – if we waited until they’re all on the disk, we’d be waiting forever for the game to come out. Now that really would give people something to complain about!
Bullet Proof: Can we expect a limited edition release in the UK?
Geraint: Yes there will definitely be a limited edition version released and hopefully we’ll be working on a few things that fans will be very excited about. We’ll be announcing details of our plans soon, so look out for that.
Bullet Proof: The European version of Calamity Trigger had different box Art to the Japanese and USA versions. Will this be the case with Continuum Shift in Europe?
Geraint: Yes. We’re currently working with 2 artists to put new box art on the European versions - so we should have something nice for you all to look at!
Bullet Proof: Is there anything you’d like to say to the BlazBlue community or new players that want to join in the fun before release?
Geraint: The feedback and the community have been absolutely brilliant – it’s really important to us that you keep up the feedback. Criticism, praise, ideas - whatever, we’re all ears, and your enthusiasm for BlazBlue really makes a difference. Hopefully we’ll be making big steps in making up for the long wait by getting Continuum Shift to you all sooner. Also if you’re a fan of BlazBlue and like the game, spread the word! Try and get your friends to play and help build the community up from grass roots.
