The film was decent I guess, but on the whole I wasn't that impressed. To me it seemed like a film unsure of whether it should become a Sunset Blvd. remake or a Singin' In The Rain remake. In the end it went for both and managed to pull it off with the added gimmick of being almost entirely silent. So judging purely from what I saw at the theatres it was an enjoyable throwback film. It was, however, curiously devoid of actual artistry (what, with the title being The Artist and all) and therefore was not much better than the films it parodies. Other films have done this much, much better. The structure of the film was pretty much exactly the same as Singin' In The Rain.It had its moments of Hollywood(land) greatness, but they were rare and I had hoped that The Artist would actually be an art film. Still, I don't think one could deny that this film does have some serious significance. Like it or not, the film has become immensely popular for a silent film, and I do think that it will make tr00 silents more acceptable to the moviegoing public and take away some skepticism people have nowadays about the silent era. I mean, I went to see the film at a local cinematheque, but it ran in the big circuits here for a few weeks as well, and even that rather large art theatre I went to see it at was jam packed with people of all ages, and everyone seemed very interested. I don't yet know what kind of interest will be sparked in silent films because of this, but I hope that it will be noticeable. And I wouldn't mind a few more silent films coming out that in themselves are works of art instead of being purely nostalgic.I mean shit, even the idea of having a swashbuckling film being made when the transfer to sound is made came from Singin In The Rain, and the final decision to have the film made into a musical to let the actor who isn't believable in talkies actually act, etc etc. Also, how could one not be reminded of Norma Desmond when Valentin lies in his bed with his arms wrapped in bandages like that and has his suicidal tendencies the whole time...
