Missingno. (けつばん, Ketsuban?, alternately ’M or a sequence of garbled characters) is a glitch found in the Pokémon Red and Blue Game Boy games. Missingno. is an abbreviation of "missing number" (its Japanese name, Ketsuban, also means "missing number"). It might be the most well known pokemon glitch. Missingno. can appear when exploiting a glitch in Pokémon Red or Blue; as such, the glitch is often referred to as the Missingno. glitch. [1] They can also be forced to appear with the Mew glitch.
After speaking to the man who teaches players how to catch Pokémon in Viridian City, a player must fly straight to Cinnabar Island and surf along the right coast (the strip of half-ground, half-water beside the Cinnabar gym). When they have swam a bit, they will probably encounter Missingno. When Missingno. is defeated, the 6th item in the item list will be cloned 128 times. The cloned item can also display bugs with blocks showing up instead of a number, etc. This bug is most exploited for cloning Nuggets (which sell for 5000 and can thus produce unlimited money), Rare Candies (which give one Pokémon a level), Master Balls (for catching every wild Pokémon 100% of the time) and PP UPs (which raise the number of times a Pokémon attack can be used).[1]
Players may also encounter glitched Pokémon in that strip, including Pokémon with a level higher than the usual maximum of 100, glitched characters such as the unfightable ghost from Lavender Town's Pokémon tower, trainers with glitched Pokémon or "Missingno." and "’M". The exact nature of these encouters depends on the character name chosen at the beginning of the game. For example, players with the name 'ANDREW' will consistently encounter the otherwise rare Mewtwo at level 141, while players with the name 'ZECH!!!' will enter battles with Cooltrainers who fight with glitched Pokemon.
Encountering or capturing Missingno. or ’M can cause strange behavior,[2] ranging from strange glitches in a player's Hall of Fame listing to the deletion of all a player's stored Pokémon. If Missingno. is captured, he can be given a rare candy and can "evolve" into many other Pokémon. Trying to transfer Missingno. or ’M to another game, such as Pokémon Stadium, often also produces similar inconsistent errors.[1] If Missingno. or 'M is traded to a Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal game, the Pokémon will show as another one, such as Remoraid or Slowpoke. The Gold/Silver/Crystal game will then state that the Pokémon (Missingno. or 'M) is abnormal and the trade will be aborted.
