Tottenham are reportedly demanding clarification after it was claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson personally picked up Dimi Berbatov from Manchester Airport and delivering him to Manchester United's training ground.
Having previously reported the champions to the Premier League for tapping up Berbatov, Tottenham remain adamant that they have not given United permission to talk to their striker. It is understood that, even with the transfer window due to close in a few hours' time, an improved offer from Old Trafford for the Bulgarian has yet to be tabled. Nonetheless, after flying to Manchester in a private jet, Berbatov has been spotted at Carrington, United's training ground, and is believed to have successfully undergone a medical.
According to BBC Radio Five Live, Tottenham are 'urgently' investigating reports that it was Ferguson himself who collected Berbatov at Manchester Airport earlier this afternoon. In a further unexpected twist, Manchester City boss Mark Hughes announced a few hours previously that, in the wake of the club's takeover, Spurs had accepted their bid for Berbatov and he hoped to speak to the player later in the day
