Italy's Olympic dreams were shattered in a controversial 3-2 quarter-final defeat to Belgium, who played with 10 men for 75 minutes.

The Azzurri were furious with the referee, who denied them two penalties on top of the couple he did award,while Belgium's first goal probably did not cross the line. Having said that, Pierluigi Casiraghi's men failed to get the better of a side that had been reduced to 10 men early on.

Tommaso Rocchi and Claudio Marchisio were ruled out for the rest of the tournament through injury, so Robert Acquafresca returned upfront. Domenico Criscito and Luca Cigarini were the other two changes from the line-up that drew 0-0 with Cameroon.

Italy were one of only two sides, along with Brazil, who were yet to concede a goal. Belgium were weakened by losing Fellaini and Vincent Kompany, recalled by club sides Standard Liege and Hamburg.

Sebastian Giovinco almost scored in the opening five minutes, his scuffed shot striking the side-netting from seven yards. Soon after, Acquafresca just failed to get enough power on to his header, but the Cagliari striker proved decisive on 16 minutes.

Acquafresca chested down a ball over the defence and was running towards the six-yard box when Thomas Vermaelen hauled him down. The referee pointed to the spot and showed the red card to the Belgian defender, who made no attempt to get the ball. Giuseppe Rossi coolly converted by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way with a left-foot finish into the top corner for his third Olympic goal.

However, 10-man Belgium drew level in controversial circumstances. Haroun's header from a corner kick was cleared off the line by Cigarini and the linesman flagged that it had crossed over, but the ball did not appear to go over in its entirety.

Giovinco tested Bailly from distance and then wasted a golden opportunity just before the break. Cigarini's hopeful snapshot was smothered, but incredibly Belgium took the lead in stoppages. Mirallas controlled De Roover's assist with his back to goal, turned Bocchetti and placed a low drive into the near corner with a slight deflection off the Azzurri defender.

After the restart Bailly had his palms stung by a powerful Rossi free kick and Marco Motta drilled wide, but Haroun threatened with a header from six yards.

Rossi hit the back of the net in a fast-paced move, but it was flagged offside. This too was a contentious decision, as it appears that it was the Belgian defender who touched the ball to him rather than Acquafresca.

There was further controversy moments later, as Rossi went clear on goal and was dribbling round the goalkeeper when his ankle was hooked by Bailly, but instead of awarding another penalty, the Argentine referee erroneously booked the former Manchester United and Parma man for simulation.

Ignazio Abate replaced Cigarini and Belgium lost goalkeeper Bailly to injury. The referee was again at the centre of attention on 66 minutes when Vertonghen appeared to barge Abate off the ball inside the area, but again nothing was awarded.

At the third time of asking, Italy received another spot-kick. De Ceglie was sandwiched between Vanden Borre and De Roover, the latter's leg clearly tripping the Italian. Rossi completed his brace of penalties with a jagged run-up and sent new 'keeper Ma-Kalambay to the ground.

Moments later Giovinco sprung the offside trap only for his pass to Acquafresca to go wayward, but once again Belgium caught Italy on the break. Dembele threaded a precise left-foot finish through Bocchetti's legs to confuse Emiliano Viviano. The Italian goalkeeper was furious with Mirallas for not giving the ball back and struck the Belgian, earning an inevitable red card.

Consigli was thrown on instead as both teams went into the final nine minutes with 10 men. Italy still poured forward with a deflected Acquafresca effort, but Mirallas skimmed the crossbar on the counter. It is a humiliating exit for the Azzurrini who had been favourites for at least a bronze medal in Beijing.

Was overduidelijke penalty.
Iedereen maar bezig over VDB, maar deze fout was nog duizend keer dommer (bal had veel vaart, hoek was al redelijk klein).

Ik vind dan wel dat je kunt discussieren over de rode kaart van Vermaelen.
Vele scheids geven daar geen rode kaart voor.

vertaal plz, ben wel eens benieuwd wat de beroemste sportkrant ter wereld te zeggen heeft (ni de feiten, eerder geïnteresseerd in de mening van de journalist moest die er bijstaan)
