As long as you have at least a GeForce4 MX card (which is less powerful than a GeForce3), you should be able to run Doom 3 with many of the bells and whistles.
PCI Express cards will not run Doom 3 noticeably faster than AGP cards.
Nvidia's 6800 cards run Doom3 'slightly' faster then x800's...
On 64MB vid cards, you have to downsize certain classes of textures. On 128MB vid cards, you can run everything at full resolution but use compressed textures. On 256MB vid cards, you can run everything with compressed diffuse and specular textures and uncompressed normal maps. For Ultra Quality, everything is uncompressed, but most levels require approximately 500MB of texture memory (in other words, no existing vid card can run at highest settings). Doom 3 automatically chooses the best options for your system, and even with 64MB vid memory, you’ll be able to run Doom 3 with great visuals and good performance right out of the box.
512MB RAM is ideal, but if you ever want to try Ultra Quality, you’ll want 1GB or more. 384MB RAM is the absolute minimum for a good Doom 3 experience.
Doom 3’s audio engine is entirely CPU-dependent. In other words, it doesn’t matter if you have a high-end Audigy 2 ZS sound card—it will sound the same even if you only used your motherboard’s built-in audio processor.
If you want Doom 3 to look as good as possible, but also want to increase your framerate a bit, the main option would be to disable the advanced special effects, which turns off fragment program support (this will reduce qualityslightly).
Enjoy
