Als volbloed videogamer kan een RPG-bordspel met enkele vrienden nogal saai overkomen. Het is echter de fantasie in het hoofd van de spelers die het verhaal tot leven laten komen en we in diepe gedachten afdwalen naar epische taferelen gevuld met monsters en wondermooie prinsessen. Het hoofdpersonage van Unepic behoort tot die eerste groep, maar komt er al snel achter dat een onschuldig avondje met vrienden helemaal anders kan uitdraaien. Het was al een tijdje beschikbaar op pc, maar sinds kort ook op de Wii U via de eShop.

Weapon Shop de Omasse laat ons kennismaken met de harde werkers die de vele toekomstige helden voorzien van het ideale wapen om op monsterjacht te vertrekken. We gaan deze keer dus niet zelf op zoek naar roem en glorie, maar werken ons in het zweet boven gloeiend heet metaal. In het juiste ritme slaan we met de zware hamer het staal in de gewenste vorm en verhuren daarna deze wapens aan de avontuurlijke klanten.

Iedereen heeft zeker en vast als kind zijn tv-idolen op de speelplaats geïmiteerd, denk dan maar aan bijvoorbeeld de Power Rangers of He-Man. Ook bij de jeugd is dat nog steeds het geval. Zij amuseren zich echter niet met ouderwetse taferelen uit de jaren '80 en '90, maar krijgen sinds kort een nieuwe tv-serie voorgeschoteld: Adventure Time. In deze serie, overgewaaid uit Amerika waar het reeds een Emmy in de wacht sleepte, gaan Finn en zijn kompaan Jake het avontuur tegemoet en ze mogen dat nu ook in een eigen game doen op de Nintendo 3DS.

Pokémon Link: Battle! is a Nintendo 3DS game where players battle Pokémon to capture them through fast-paced puzzles. When you catch a wild Pokémon, it is called a Link. Your goal in this game is to Link every last Pokémon. In Pokémon Link: Battle!, you must make matches of the same Pokémon from among all the many Pokémon that fill your Link Box—the large field of Pokémon on the lower screen. The Pokémon that appears on the top screen is the wild Pokémon that you are facing in battle. Line up three Pokémon in a row to clear your Pokémon from the box, and to attack and reduce the HP of the wild Pokémon that you face. When its HP reaches zero, you will be able to Link that Pokémon! As time passes, the wild Pokémon will also lash out to attack you in return. When you’re attacked by a wild Pokémon, the Link Box will lose some of its energy. The wild Pokémon you face may even try to get in your way! If the Link Box’s energy reaches zero, it’s game over. Pokémon Link: Battle! features all 718 Pokémon discovered to date, including those that just debuted in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. And all of the Pokémon appearing in Pokémon Link: Battle! have a new look with cool and cute icons.

Yoshi’s New Island is the first instalment in this series since Yoshi’s Island DS was released in 2006. Yoshi’s good old Flutter Jump, Ground Pound and egg-throwing return, along with new abilities and challenges that take advantage of the features of the Nintendo 3DS. You can use massive eggs called Mega-Eggs to destroy blocks and pipes, revealing secrets such as coins and hidden keys. The more things you destroy, the higher the Mega-Egg gauge goes, netting you extra lives in the process!

Terug gaan in de tijd. Handig om vergissingen ongedaan te maken, maar helaas is dat enkel mogelijk in onze fantasie die we met een beetje geluk vervullen in videogames. Zo kan de hoofdrolspeelster in AeternoBlade met de tijd spelen en haar mislukte confrontatie met de aanwezige snoodaard een betere afloop bezorgen. Een interessant concept dat we aantroffen in de Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Steel Diver diende bij de lancering van de Nintendo 3DS om enkele nieuwigheden van het toestel uit te lichten. Deze veredelde techdemo kreeg recentelijk een vervolg in de eShop die meer thuishoort bij de free-to-play first person shooters die als paddenstoelen uit de grond schieten. Wij kropen samen met onze bemanning aan boord van een van de beschikbare duikboten en peilden naar de kwaliteit van dit multiplayer-tussendoortje.

In this hidden gem of an action game from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, you play heroic dragon Tamagon, who must defeat evil by collecting boa-boa dots inside a maze and destroying enemies with his fire breath. Enerzijds gebeurt het regelmatig dat games zich een weg naar het witte doek banen, maar anderzijds maken we af en toe de omgekeerde beweging mee. Het valt meer dan eens voor dat we met interactieve (teken)films op de consoles aan de slag kunnen. Zo wordt The Mysterious Cities of Gold nog maar eens van onder het stof gehaald om ons avonturen te laten beleven. Deze keer gebeurt dat op de Nintendo 3DS.

De Nintendo 3DS is al behoorlijk voorzien van puzzelvertier. Het simpele tik- en sleepwerk leent zich dan ook perfect voor dergelijke games. Aan de lange lijst werd onlangs een nieuwe titel toegevoegd. Met Tappingo gaan we wederom onze grijze massa laten werken om puzzels op te lossen en deze keer is het ook weer net iets anders als voordien.
