Seriously, it is not that hard to get a grasp on what's going on in this game. You're "spoon fed" what to do, and the majority of it is common sense.
- Can't call in air support? Take out the AA batteries.
- Vehicles getting pounded? Take out the artillery banks.
- Bunkers really protecting the breach walls that you can't get through efficiently? Take out the bunkers and push the enemy's spawn back.
The only thing that "may" confuse people is the chain of command system, and even that is learned quickly.
-The weapons are great, though there could be a greater selection.
-The character MMO-like progression/specializations are the best in class with this shooter.
-The lack of overly-retarded auto-aim is a blessing.
-The maps for the most part are 2nd to none in design. SVER may have a slight advantage, but they're supposed to because by game design they have the least sophisticated weapons, but make up for it in defenses.
-The gameplay is spot on. It's a perfect balance in between SOCOM and CoD.
-The game modes are great overall. Something for everyone.
-The game also runs amazing considering the size and scope of the battlefields. Towards the end of the beta it really cleared up. The game is the best running shooter out there, and it's player count blows away anything else on console, go figure.
-The visuals are not nearly as bad as you'd think for a game like this, in fact, it looks pretty good.
-The sound is realistic in nature, not overly done hollywood style, which is refreshing.
Can you lone wolf? Sure. You can still rack up the XP. Will the "group buffs" a-la MMO's give an advantage to those who work together? Absolutely. It will be amazing to see platoons that work together tear stuff up.
The game is very versatile in what "type" of player you want to be as well. Support classes and medics can really make a huge difference in the outcome of a battle.
It's a great game that's for sure. It's not just for SOCOM players either, despite the majority of hardcore SOCOM guys waiting to jump aboard at day one. It will attract CoD-esque fans that give it a chance to see what it's all about. It will also attract hardcore shooter fans who hate how most of the games out now have overly-done auto/sticky aim, and if you're skilled, you will show it. At the same time, it will also allow those who may not be as skilled to team up and maybe make the difference in the outcome as well. One person can slink off to say a bunker, gate, AA, artillery, and take it out shifting the battle quickly as the defenders scramble to secure and repair the objective, while trying to hold down the outer perimeter as well.
I was blown away with the job the people at Zipper did. They pulled off something incredible here that the game is more than "playable" with the amount of people in the game. It shames those companies that struggle to run a 6v6 even. I would also LOVE to see what they can do with a new-real SOCOM after seeing this game in motion. It'll hold me over until that day.
Finally, Zipper has listened to a LOT of input from the beta testers. They may constant improvements every step of the way. It'll be interesting to see what the final retail version has in store for everyone.
There's your impressions. And people I play with here know I'm pretty hard on shooters, and know I'm pretty good at them at the same time. This is a type of game we didn't get to see, it's really something I expected to see more of this gen, and instead we just get one.
It's a free demo. Give it a shot, and if it doesn't somehow click right off the bat and you're overwhelmed with the scope don't worry. Keep playing it, use common sense, and see if it makes a difference. If it's not for you, so be it, but many would enjoy this as Zipper did a great job to cater to both Hardcore and Casuals at the same time.
EDIT: Also, nothing like parachuting down in group choosing where you land, for example, hard to get to roof tops. Also, nothing like picking up the sniper and watching people die in mid air. Then there's the A-10 warthog strafing runs with their main guns raining death, not to mention their cluster bombs.
