Attacking Possession:
Arrow Keys - Player Movement

Defending:

2. Advanced Controls

When you have control of the ball, hold C + shift + arrow keys. By doing this your player will do freestyle tricks. Different arrow keys do different things, so be sure to experiment!

To change your strategy, hold down the C + Z keys and use arrow keys. This is a good in game strategy.

By holding down the C key when in control of the ball, this will make your player move slower.

Through balls at the best of times for some people, however by pressing A (for a lob pass) and quickly after press Q (so your player makes a run) and it should get him into space. This is good when you find it hard passing your way through 4 solid defenders!

When shooting you should try and aim at the opposite goal post. To take a shot low to the ground try the combination of D + C.



3. How to: Defend

Defending is more difficult in Fifa 2004 compared to Fifa 2003. If you are a possession hog you'll find the opposition will attack fast and furious when they win the ball back! It is important to keep a strong last line of defense. I believe it is a number one rule to keep your defenders in between the defenders and the goal unless you manage to win the ball back. Unlike last year the forwards will not try and run through your defenders, they’re not that stupid. They will try and make little moves past you to run into space, and trust me, they do! Try to avoid sliding tackles with your defenders because you risk receiving a card. If a forward gets past you into the box, tackle gently! If you push them over with a conservative tackle, they'll tumble like a sack of spuds and be rewarded a penalty. This year you can let your keeper charge at the opposition. This takes some common sense to master, to make your keeper run at a forward hold W, I recommend just before he reaches the player (if he can) release the W key and he should take the ball from the forward's feet. The C key will also call a defender over to help you.



4. How to: Take Freekicks

There is nothing worse that seeing your freekick go miles over the goals. Freekicks are MUCH harder than last year, although it is not impossible to score! Follow these simple steps and you will be on your way to getting it on target, and hopefully scoring.

Step 1: Aim your shot. Try not aim near the keeper because the ball will go over the wall if you aim it behind the wall. Make sure you add some curve to your shot. To do this: SHIFT key + Arrows. Add Curve to the side opposide to the one you want it to curve. For example : If you want the ball to swerve to the right, add curve to the left of the ball using the Shift Key + arrow controls.

Step 2: Press D to start the meter. Don’t use too much power. Make sure the power indicator does not return back after you press D. Make sure u stop the meter soon after you press D by pressing D again. This takes some practice to get the right judgment. Excess power will see the ball go straight into the stands way off target.

Step 3: After you stop the power meter by pressing D again, the little arrow will go back towards the green part extremely quickly! The green Area is where you want the arrow to land for optimum results.

If you get the arrow right in between the green area, more often than not, you will score provided you aimed correctly and added a bit of curve.


Takes a little practice, but if you get it right, it’s a great feeling.



5. Taking Corners

A corner is a good way to get a goal against the run of play. You can either take a regular corner where you cross the ball and hope for a player to tuck it into the back of the net, or play a short corner by making a short pass to the nearest player and then make something happen from there. To take a long corner, press D and shoot with sufficient power. When you get a corner, you will see a menu which lets you choose what type of cross you wants your player to produce. It can be in-swinging at the near post or far post, or in the centre. Choose the type and press D, you will see a mark on the field which tells you where the ball is heading for approximately. With that in mind, move a player to that area and press D again to make him head or shoot the ball provided he gets to it soon enough. If you take a short corner, you can pass around and play like you would normally. I have found that in-swinging crosses to the far post produce the best results if done well.



6. Passing

Passing is probably the most important aspect of the game, if you can't pass well, then you're not going to have much luck in the game. Long passes are hard, so I recommend not to go for passes half the length of the pitch. Patience is a virtue. Your players aren't going to be free all the time, so think like a footballer! In the demo I found a strong player like Seedorf (playing as Juve) is a royal pain in the arse. Players like Seedorf will just intercept the ball, so try not to pass near him all the time, he reads the play well. I also find it's not best to keep possession of the ball for a long period of time, it makes it harder to find players because it gives the defence time to limit your options. If you press Z while in possession of the ball, you can choose the recipient of the pass before you pass! Toggle Z to choose your player.
