The news (now moved to journal) that the Doom 3 coop mod was a trojan was not all that unexpected. When a new game is out there are people that try to steal cd-keys and there are a lot of forum posts about such things happening.

However in this case it is false. The 2kb .pak file only contains a maplist. There is simply nothing in it that can steal your cd-key (unless id messed up and sends the cd-keys to servers when connecting, which seems highly unlikely). So all you who have downloaded it can relax.

There is every reason to be careful when a new game is released. Always be suspicious when a mod wants to install an unknown .exe-file. But this mod is not a cd-key stealing trojan.

Apologies to all who got worried for nothing.

Couple days ago a mod that would allow co-op in Doom 3 was released which supposedly wasn't finnished. However after several members from PlanetDoom gave it a test, they've recently discouvered that their cd key was now listed as "Already in Use". All of what this mod seems to do is display single player maps in the map list and crashes the host whenever a player attempts to join. Obviously, from now on it is believed that this is not a mod at all but more of a cd-key stealing program, so please be aware next time about what you download.

1 possible explanation might be that the creator of this mod accidently packed his own cdkey into the mod directory, causing the "Already in Use" message. Anyway, DON'T download this "mod". Prevention is better than cure! Obviously, the link to this mod has been deleted from our mod section.

Update:A post at the Guru3d.com also warns us for this exploit.


FINAL UPDATE:As you can read here, the Doom 3 Co-op is safe! You can find the mod back in our Files/links section.

Heeft er al iemand een co-op mod gespeelt in DOOM³? En waar heb je die dan gehaald?
