On May 17, 2007, The CW announced that the show would return for a fifth season, but as a mid-season replacement. The show will be "dramatically retooled and set four years into the future - after the characters have already graduated from college." Until the show's return to the schedule, the network has plans to post diaries online to fill in the intervening years in the characters' lives. The fifth season began shooting on July 29, 2007.

Dawn Ostroff confirmed on July 20, 2007 that One Tree Hill has a 22-episode order.[1]

Hilarie Burton confirmed on TRL that the show's fifth season will focus on their lives after college, citing the reason for this as: "We've seen the High School dramas not do so well while they're in college, and another thing, we've done everything that everyone does in college". She said this will "enable them to do flashbacks and a lot of cool stuff with the characters".

Chad Michael Murray has stated that Lucas will be a best-selling author releasing his second book, and will also be Coach of Tree Hill's High School Basketball Team. Lucas will help a struggling 18 year old and become very depressed and look to his friends for help.

3 days after the season 4 finale, a promo hit the net explaining what would happen to certain characters. It appears that Brooke will become a famous fashion designer, and Nathan will lose his NBA dreams some how.

According to Ask Ausiello on TVGuide.com, "Expect some new faces to join the familiar ones: a cocky new Ravens player who will butt heads with Lucas (possibly named Quentin), a New York book editor who has a hard time balancing work and play, plus a manipulative business executive with a cruel streak (either of the two mentioned will be named Lydia or Lindsey; not sure as to which is which) and a beautiful and nurturing nanny named Carrie for Nathan and Haley's son, James, who will cause a strain on their marriage. Speaking of that baby we left in diapers last season, expect one smart little boy when we return, who will be about four years old and very mature for his age."

According to Ask Ausiello on TVGuide.com "Newcomer Michaela McManus has been added to the cast for a multi-episode arc. She'll be playing a "tough but kind" New York editor assigned to work on Lucas' novel. Daphne Zuniga, meanwhile, is doing five episodes as a "glamorous and intimidating" business exec who works with Brooke."

According to Kristin on E! online, "Fifth-season rumors are swirling around the Web, and we’re working on confirming (or denying) the following: Moira Kelly may no longer be a part of the cast; Nathan might be in a wheelchair with no hope of an NBA career; Rachel might be working for Brooke at her own boutique (à la postcollege Donna Martin). Again, this info is still sketchy, so don’t jump to any conclusions just yet."

According to Ausiello, Brooke will be on the red carpet and in the press spotlight. [2]

According to Ask Ausiello on TVGuide.com, " Lucas has written a successful first book, but due to a case of writer's block, he's having a hard time churning out a follow-up. He has also gotten involved with the Ravens, most likely as an assistant coach. Brooke, meanwhile, is off in New York being a successful fashion designer. The name of her inaugural line? "Clothes over Bros."
