Archief - VBS1 movie

- multiple gunnerpositions

Animals
- Watch the animals feed and move about in freedom, plus react to every possible situation especially in combat situations.
Camels ,Kangaroos ,Goats ,Dogs ,Foxes, ,Rabbits and Snakes
-Inbuilt Unit voice communications using the new DirectX™ 9.0+ Direct Voice feature set.

Having had my copy of VBS1 for the better part of 2 weeks now I have to say that my opinion of it is 2 thumbs up!
From a gamers point of view (looking through the eyes of a hobby Ghost Recon weapons, characters and vehicle modeler) everything looks outstanding and true to nature, only thing it leaves me wishing for is a better system to run it on. Ever so often the AI opponents really take me by surprise in their clever attempts at for example outflanking me or my team mates.
The only thing I have found so far that isn't true to nature would be some weapons firing tracers when they really shouldn't be and handgrenades exploding on impact.

As for its value as a training tool, being a former infantry squadleader I can easily say that VBS1 would of been an invaluable aid in training. Although real live training will never be surpassed as the ultimate training tool VBS1 gives an increased ability to train on scenarios that would be near impossible, or impossible, to recreate live. With the addition of the Observer and AAR modules the value as a training tool is increased even further, giving instructors the ability to follow the action from multiple views and later on replay and analyze what has taken place. This is something that can be very hard to do in a live trainingscenario but is made very accessible through the use of VBS1. It wouldn't surprise me if more organisations chooses VBS1 as an alternative tool for training purposes.

Inside the case was 3 CDs and what I initially thought was a USB Memory key. Turns out this little USB dongle is the only way the application will run,
it must be connected to the USB port for VBS1 to function.

While this works pretty well for anti-piracy needs it seems to have been developed to the needs of the military organisations using the software
for training.

The other function that the USB Key provides is the ability to encrypt data so that it can only be read by specific copies of VBS1 with the right USB Key.
This means that content that is created can be locked to specific organisation and not used anywhere else. So for all of those hardcore Flashpoint fans who
were planning a raid on the USMC to get VBS1 units and weapons for Flashpoint they wouldn't of worked anyway in the unlikely event you survived.

AI stuff

Also the AI\'s tactical skill is abit daunting. Had these soldiers advancing toward me when they started to take fire. A few of them dropped to the ground and were taking potshots which was getting to be effective fire. Most of my AI were injured or dead, but i thought i had the situation in hand as i was slowly picking them off when all of a sudden 5-6 enemy appear out of dead ground to my right outflanking me. I think i lasted about 5 secs after they got to the top of the rise. These aren\'t super ai which pick you off at 300m with a head shot, but they are a lot smarter where it comes to tactics. I wasn\'t expecting them to out flank me while the others where giving covering fire....
Artificial Intelligence:-
The AI of the OPFOR and friendly AI is a crucial component in this program if it were “dumb” then the program while good looking and easy to use would not offer any real training value. The ADF pack and VBS I witnessed running had the most proficient AI I’ve seen in any PC simulation. One engagement witnessed from the 2D AAR Mode saw one platoon sized enemy element split into two separate elements, one element laid suppressing fire while the other tried to flank the friendly position.

In addition the missions can be created so that the enemy will behave or reinforce their positions to maximise training value. I.e. if assaulting village if enemy gets to certain lowered strength then reinforcements will arrive to support them.

Also making a presence is animals- sheep, rabbits, Kangaroos etc all faithfully recreated and they act in relation to the player- gunfire will scatter the sheep flocks this giving the friendly or enemy your location or vice versa.

The AI is realistic in that if you are quiet and behind vegetation they will not see you or “Sense” you, some Civilian FP shooters are notorious for AI that sees you through multiple bushes and knows where you are even if you can’t see them.....

Close combat - First to Fight is er ook zo één.

Press release
Close Combat: First to Fight is an authentic, team-based first-person shooter created under the direction of active-duty United States Marines fresh from the front lines of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Set in a modern mid-eastern urban battleground, players lead a four-man Marine fireteam through the perils of modern urban combat. Together with the United States Marine Corps and Atomic Games, Destineer is creating First to Fight as a training simulation for use by the Marine Corps and will make it available to consumers in late 2004 for Xbox®, Macintosh®, and Windows®.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Sharp of the United States Marine Corps, “Marines from the First Marine Expeditionary Force have been working closely with Destineer and Atomic throughout development to ensure as much realism as possible in these games.” Peter Tamte, Destineer’s president adds, “There is no guesswork on how to make the games realistic since we are developing First to Fight and Red Phoenix with significant input from Marines who, just weeks before, were being shot at in Iraq and Afghanistan. ”

First to Fight is brought to life by a visually advanced 3D engine created from the ground up by Destineer. This engine, filled with next-generation features like volumetric shadows, normal maps, natural skin lighting and specularity, promises to give players a first-hand look at the chaos and terror of modern urban combat.

The next in the series, Close Combat: Red Phoenix™, is a realistic real-time strategy game set on the challenging terrains of today’s Korean peninsula. Loosely based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Larry Bond, Red Phoenix puts players in command of a reinforced rifle platoon of U.S. Marines or South Korean soldiers fighting against an invasion by North Korea in 2006. Red Phoenix is scheduled for worldwide release in early 2005.

The original Close Combat® series, released between 1996 and 2000, merged realistic warfare with modern technology. Created by Atomic Games® and originally published by Microsoft®, the result was a groundbreaking game series that went on to win dozens of military strategy game awards, as well as being named by PC Gamer as one of “The 50 Best Games Ever” in October, 1998.
