an additional note for those finding this thread via google as I did.. This came up because I was installing the lide-20 scanner on vista, but didnt want to use the twain driver. That worked fine in photoshop but the 'fax and scan' software would not recognize the scanner without the wia software. I saw a few entries relating to downloading the driver for xp but that wouldnt install. Instead giving an error
"cannot install on windows98(SE)/Me/2000."
I was stuck here for quite a while.. but of course all you have to do is go into the install properties for the executable... change the compatibility setting to the xp setting and you're good to go. It will install from there and I have now tested it to work.
So people can search that error message easier...
