Security Council blasts North Korean nuclear test - CNN.comSEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- United Nations Security Council members condemned North Korea's nuclear test Monday as a "clear violation" of U.N. resolutions, with some raising the prospect of new sanctions on Pyongyang as a result.
The United States will seek "strong measures" against North Korea after the test, the second conducted by the reclusive communist state, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said.
France will support new sanctions as well, Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert said, and Japanese Ambassador Yukio Takasu said that "an additional element must be included" in a new resolution condemning the test.
Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the relatively short, closed-door meeting at U.N. headquarters showed that diplomats were unanimous in finding that the test was a "clear violation" of previous resolutions calling for North Korea to avoid provocative steps such as nuclear weapons or missile tests.
Pyongyang had threatened to carry out the test unless the U.N. Security Council apologized for imposing sanctions on North Korea after it tested a rocket April 5.
