BBC Dance Review zei:With club culture now more than thirty years old isn't it about time somebody wrote a book about how to DJ (properly)? Praise the lord for Bill and Frank! They've done it. Thanks to their intellectual vigour the ancient and sacred art of DJing now has its scripture.
Bill and Frank have written much about the DJ, in fact since 1994, they've made it their life's work. Their last book, the much lauded history of the disc jockey Last Night A DJ Saved My Life taught us much about the roots of dance culture. It explored the deeper connections between DJs, styles and genres that extended way back to the likes of Ron Hardy, Larry Levan and Jimmy Saville.
This book, although primarily instructional, adds to that legacy with information and tit bits on the first guy ever to make mixers, Alex Rosner (as rescued by Oscar Schindler in World War II) and the first DJ to ever beat mix, Francis Grasso. Like Last Night..., this wonderful tome is a labour of love, in fact, there was no way that the quintessential guide to the art and science of DJing could have been written otherwise.
It's all here. From how to buy music, to buying equipment, beat matching, throwing a great party, scratching, mixing CDs and MP3s as well as tips on how to release a record. There is also some sage advice for females wanting to break into what is still essentially a male domain. In addition to the technical wisdom, Messrs Brewster and Broughton do much to stress the importance of audience interaction and the ubiquitous, insane desire to discover music and share it with others that any good DJ must possess.
The book is also littered with handy tips from some of the world's best:
"I look for hair styles and beards on a band. If they've got long hair and beards they're likely to make better records. Especially those big seventies bands with eight of them in - half white, half black and they look like they all take acid" - Norman Cook on How to build a collection
Bill and Frank have given anyone who DJs a chance to explore their heritage and with it the opportunity to really understand the role of the DJ both in terms of their power over the dance floor and their cultural context. As a resultDanny Tenaglia now how has a curriculum on which to structure a DJ academy and I now know what a hamster switch is. Mmmm... Bible-like.
