Terrence Malick's a Big Goofball; Harry Reid's Taxpayer-Funded Trip to China - Entertainment - The Atlantic Wire

Terrence Malick's mystique comes from the fact he goes years between projects, doesn't show up to collect awards, and allegedly has a clause in his contract preventing people from taking his picture. The real Malick is somewhat different, according to his Tree of Life production designer Jack Fisk.“The craziest thing about Terry is he’s just a normal guy," Fisk told the audience at a Q & A for The Tree of Life. "He cracks jokes, he doesn’t mind having his picture taken. His favorite movies are Zoolander and Dodgeball." We believe it when his next movie features a carefree gasoline fight and Vince Vaughn getting in the head with a wrench.

wtf? :D

Twentieth Century Fox announced today that Ridley Scott will direct Prometheus, an original science fiction epic, for worldwide release on March 9, 2012. The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Scott's idea. Damon Lindelof ("Lost," Star Trek) and Scott have since been working together on the current version which has expanded the story into new directions.

Story details are being closely guarded so as not to spoil surprises for moviegoers, but Scott explained the outlines of the film and its genesis as follows: "While 'Alien' was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of 'Alien's' DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart."

"In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots," said Lindelof. "I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie. It's daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true."

HYPE! HYPE! HYPE! ^^

Een iets informatievere synopsis van Gravity, de nieuwe sci-fi thriller van Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Y Tu Mamá También, Prisoner of Azkaban) is zojuist bekend gemaakt.

Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone--tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth...and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. The only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space...

I had read a previous draft of the script and this is similar yet different (unless the synopsis is being deliberately misleading). What should be really interesting is to what Cuaron and Emmanuel Lubezki (working in 3D for the first time) have planned. There have been rumors that the film will be shot, or at least presented, in one-take, which would be fascinating to experience.

producer David Heyman said,

We’re using technology that’s never seen before. This film will be more immersive, I believe, than anything you’ve seen before. You will really feel like you are in space. It will not be an objective view of space, it will be an immersive view of space. And you know as you say, with Children of Men, he loves these long shots. It’s gonna be a really bold, bold film.

And Guillermo del Toro said of the film,

I think he would kill me if I reveal [what is so crazy about it], and in time it will be publicized, but I think that in the same way that he pushed the narrative in Children of Men…[they] are absolutely pushing a new boundary in filmmaking, completely mind-blowing. And they way they’re making [Gravity] will I think foverever change certain types of productions. The engineering and the ingenuity of the machines they’ve created to film that way is fantastic. I”m amazed at Alfonso in the last few movies, because he has completely transformed himself.
