During the fairly brief press demo, Rockstar demonstrated a handful of innovative features in Red Dead Redemption......Red Dead Redemption’s old west is alive with randomly generated encounters. Riding through a valley, the main character was greeted by several travelers on horseback - each of whom could be solicited for conversation, and occasionally quests. There were also events, like a man being lynched, who could be rescued, ignored, or murdered, or a gang of outlaws raiding a stagecoach. All of these events, and the actions the player takes during them, add to an overall scale of fame, notoriety, and nobility. Even the tiniest actions, like hunting a rabbit for meat and pelts, eventually tie into some other aspect of the game. Animals can be hunted for their fur, which can then be sold at a trader. Banks in towns can be robbed, simply by walking in with a weapon drawn - or, a nobler player could diffuse a bank robbery committed by NPC bandits. These random events look like they could go a long way to shape Red Dead Redemption’s world.

"There's three linked bits of map. You start in what we're calling the Frontier area and these are all counties or states or regions…meant to be one of the last wild patches still being brought under the yolk of modern America. Telegraph poles are everywhere, people are starting to play around with big telephones in their offices, but on the other hand people have hardly ever seen any other form of modernization. The trains have been there for a while, but it's still pretty primitive, and still pretty lawless, and still has a Marshall rather than a police force…
Then you get sent to Mexico to a province that is on the point of civil war. You get to see some of the characters there including the local, somewhat overly zealous political leaders and there'll be rebellious leaders and some other people hiding out south of the border from life in America.
Then you eventually end up back in the Northeastern part of the map which is a contrast geographically with the other two which are different styles of more desert and scrub, and this is much more verdant with pine trees and hills and mountains in there and also a bigger town which is a lot more modern…so you end the map with a lot more of the modern world in your face."
Lots and lots of things are being set up to happen around you in a very organic way, be it wild animals to interact with or wild characters to interact with. There's constantly stuff to see and engage with or just watch engage with itself."
While exploring you might see an NPC spontaneously rob another, then in the middle of the act a mountain lion might pounce on the criminal.
